Rhythm & Roots presents: Ruthie Foster Band with Eric Bibb
Ruthie Foster if one of America's finest soul-blues artists." -Blues Revue
“Eric Bibb has an elegant, earthy feel for blues, folk and gospel.” - Billboard
Ruthie Foster's voice has been compared to Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner and Joan Armatrading. The Austin Chronicle wrote, "Foster’s deeply soulful vocals dip into gospel with R&B panache. When she sings a cappella, the heavens part.”
Gospel-infused bluesman Eric Bibb has been a Tucson favorite for nearly ten years. His velvety voice wraps around the listener like a flannel blanket. Often compared to Keb Mo’ and Taj Mahal, Bibb’s 16 albums firmly establish him as a leading voice of acoustic blues.

Les Yeux Noirs
“Twin fiddles lead the way, blazing through traditional Gypsy songs.”
– Washington Post
Les Yeux Noirs, French for “The Black Eyes,” takes their name from the title of a Russian gypsy tune made famous by Django Reinhardt in the 1930’s. It’s the perfect name for the eight-piece band from Paris that keeps alive the styles of Eastern Europe’s gypsies and Jews, with violins, cello, accordion, guitar, cymbalom, bass and percussion. Twin brothers, violinists Erik and Olivier Slabiak, grew up in Paris in the 1970's, the sons of Jewish immigrants from Poland. They quit their studies at the Brussels Royal Conservatory to found the band. They were inspired by their uncle, a Gypsy and jazz violinist, who played with Django and Joseph Reinhardt. Le Monde wrote, "This group of Gypsy musicians have incredible energy, with roots in traditional music, but also in jazz…Les Yeux Noirs will keep you on the edge of your seat.”

Carrie Newcomer
"Carrie is a touchstone of authenticity in an image-driven, media-defined musical world. She is a beautiful singer and songwriter, and deeply refreshing."
— Rosanne Cash
Carrie Newcomer sings of the small joys and pains in life, emphasizing the little moments that are often taken for granted. She is not afraid to take on serious subjects, and does so with a healthy measure of good humor and self-awareness. For her, "songwriting is not about being clever, flashy or fancy, it is about telling a compelling story in language and music with elegance and clarity."
Newcomer's music has been praised in Rolling Stone, The Village Voice, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, Acoustic Guitar and Performing Songwriter. Barbara Kingsolver wrote, “To my mind - a writer's mind- Carrie Newcomer is much more than a musician. She's a poet, storyteller, snake-charmer, good neighbor, friend and lover, minister of the wide-eyed gospel of hope and grace. All this, and she comes with a voice that declares, 'Sit down here a minute and listen.' Who could ask for more?"

Walter Strauss with Mamadou Sidibe
Michael Hedges meets Bruce Cockburn and together they steal Ry Cooder’s smoking jacket.
American guitar wizard Walter Strauss is simply the most dazzling guitarist since Michael Hedges. Together with Malian kamal'ngoni master Mamadou Sidibe their musical interplay of finger-style guitar and West African hunter's harp creates a deep, soulful music that is simultaneously ancient and fresh. These two unique musicians from distant origins create an intoxicating blend of music in which they gracefully complement each other through intertwining melodic grooves and spirited improvisation. To hear these two musicians from far flung places collaborate is to take in two souls, listening and greeting one another in a universal language—seamlessly interweaving two continents and two bright musical sensibilities.
